Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire
by jreuben1 » Mon Jul 26, 2010 1:34 pm
Hi
My wife works for a local NHS PCT, which have been given the dreaded axe by the Government. She will be made redundant any time between now and sometime in 2011.
She has been offered a position at a Hospital Trust in Haverfordwest which if she takes up the offer and actually gets the job, then it will mean us having to move to that area.
If this all comes off and we do move, apart from the Cardiff team (which may be just too far to travel regularly) are there any players or teams that might have some time to play some games. I played for Yorkshire Phoenix a couple of seasons ago, but only in their league meetings at Conference level although I did win a plate competition a couple of years ago. I have only played in their competitions they have run, other than the league meetings.
The games would be a social thing to start with, depending on me getting a job and what hours I would be doing.
We are coming down to that area this weekend to have a look around and see what it has to offer a family with a 5 year old.
Jason
As I say, nothing is concrete at the moment, so this is possibly a little premature. I was just wondering.

Hwlffwrdd is lovely, as is most of Pembs. The nearest games club there I know is Swansea, you might be able to pick up a few players there, it's mainly wargames but some of them might play if you take a table along.
If you want contact details let me know.
Otherwise, it's us in Cardiff mate.

Hi
Thanks Jester. Cardiff might just be too far away to get regular games and not sure how often you get together to play. At Phoenix, it used to be approx every couple of months, but I have had to stop playing due to work comittments, but originally, I lost a bit of interest but I am looking to get back into playing. The problem is that if we do not go, I wont be able to play beacause of my job, but if we move and I dont find work straight away, then I will have some spare time. The problem with Swansea is I dont have a table, just a board that goes on my dining table at home. It also does not fit in my car as it is an original subbuteo astropitch and is bigger than the ones we used at Phoenix. If i knew how often you played, then I might be able to visit.
Thanks anyway.

No probs mate, every other Sat and every other Wed.
Sats are at the hall where we have more tables and cake.
Weds are at the pub where we usually only have one table but beer.
Once a month I try to get to the games club in Taffs Well to recruit new players which is why I suggested Swansea.
Hmmmm. I know they have a storage room there, if you're really interested in giving it a shot there and forming a club (or an annex to Cardiff) lemme know and I'll talk with some of the guys I know who play there and see if there's not some way we can get a table down there for them to keep. It would be a big investment on our part so we'd need to judge very carefully the interest.
Games clubs are a good place to meet people since they already like playing board games, it's especially good for me because there are almost always nerds there.
Have a think about it and let me know. Last I checked, Swansea games club used to meet every Wednesday. Taffs well meet every Thursday and one Saturday a month, I've got the Saturdays at the moment but I'm hoping to get enough players there to get the Thursdays as well so there's always hope.
There is a Games Workshop just opened in Carmarthen and very often the people (nerds) who play in there set up their own games clubs. GW might even let you post info on their message board if you're nice to the staff, it's on an individual basis and I don't know who's running that shop, my nerd connections don't stretch that deep.
If you need any more help just let me know mate.
But pop up one Saturday anyway, it's always fun.

Can she not commute, Jason ?
I'm not particularly impressed by Hwlffwrdd itself but Sir Benfro is lovely.

You never know Jason, the Con-Dem coalition that made the cuts might have collapsed by 2011... we can only hope

Hi
Had a look around this weekend and it seems a very nice area. Don't think we would live in Haverfordwest itself, but the surrounding areas are good.
Wife is going to apply for the job, the only thing that will stop us going is not bring able to find a decent English speaking school for our five year old.
Thanks
Jason

Hi
The wife has been offered the job and at this moment, it looks like we are going. She has to tell them by Tuesday.

Nice one mate. It's a lovely part of the world. Been on holidays there a few times.
Drop us a line when you've settled in and I'll send you some dates when we meet.
